Local color expert has designs on being 'green'

For designer and certified color expert Jen Guerin, "green" isn't just a color.
It's a viewpoint toward environmentally friendly design that colors her way of seeing the world. She learned firsthand of the toxic fumes that can be present in products while running her own decorative painting company, Ox & Olive.
Guerin, who runs JG Color Studios in Banker's Hill, received national attention earlier this year when she was one of 10 contestants on the fourth season of "HGTV Design Star," the network's most popular series. Although she didn't win the coveted prize of hosting a series on the network, she has been able to parlay her success into a platform to promote green products such as American Clay, a natural Earth plaster.
"American Clay has many benefits that I haven't been able to find in any other paint product besides sharing the fact that it has zero VOCs," or volatile organic compounds, she said. "Since it is almost completely made up of clay material from the earth, it harbors such benefits such as 'breathability' and permeability. That means it allows moisture to pass through the wall surface and lowers the propensity for mold or mildew."

Guerin also points out that the natural components of American Clay help it repel dust and pet hair as well as technical ion charges "that aren't so good for us.
"Studies also show that clay plasters on walls can actually lessen heat or cold coming through the walls. How about that? It saves on your energy bill," she said.
Although some people assume that going green means resigning one's self to earth tones, Guerin insists that belief is incorrect.
"It's only a myth," she said. "I have a client who has fuchsia in the kitchen and cobalt blue in the dining room, but has solar panels, and uses only green energy."
Guerin also like to "go green" by reusing old items in fun new ways. She has been shopping at Architectural Salvage on Kettner Boulevard for 12 years and enjoys finding new uses for the beautiful old objects she gets there.
"I recently found some vintage crystal door handles and I'm installing them in my bathroom walls as a towel rack," she said. "Also, I am currently working on turning U-31 in North Park from a nightclub to an eatery in the early evening hours before the D.J. arrives.
"Instead of throwing away the gorgeous circular tops of the tall tables, we are cutting them off the stems and installing them on the wall with backlighting to create a stunning three-dimensional wall.
"For me, reusing items such as salvage items as this is better than recycling; you have a little piece of history in your home."
While it may be easier than ever for a designer to go green, Guerin suggests people decide how deep they want to go before they start a project, because it's a lot "like deciding whether you're a vegetarian or a vegan.
"Using green paints and plasters is a good start, but it's important to do research because that Italian couch made out of hemp may be environmentally friendly at its point of origin, but its carbon footprint gets bigger the further away it's shipped from the factory," she said.

Watch and see how I can pull it together.....keeping the enviroment in mind every second and each purchase.

Creating art and speaking at the Woman's Expo

So my new to do list includes not only speaking at Ikea Thanksgiving weekend and the woodworkers meeting here in San Diego but I've had the honor to be asked to lecture about color and my experience being a part of the Design Star cast at the Women's Expo in Pasedena on October 11th and on December 4th in Del Mar. I'm working my booty off on a new line of paintings that will be exclusively for sale at the two events and a small design line for the home. Laura of Colori will be selling her gilded tiles at the booth as well. Come check it out!

Riveria magazine

This month's latest Riveria magazine features not only JG Color Studios as the back page but also Matt Devine of the Glass Haus and Little Italy's Luis de Jesus. Some of the biggest artistic influences in San Diego this year. The Glass Haus is one of my favorite places to visit new artists and see the most talented pieces put together in our little art scene. My other favorite Friday night stop is Subtext and this Friday night is Kettner Nights. I'll be stopping by Bedford Built to see his new pieces and Klassik to check out a new sofa for my new pad.

Dwell on Design 2009 - Best of show by JG

I was able to visit the Dwell on Design show in Los Angeles this last weekend at the convention center to work with American Clay and see my friend Cyril at EcoStucco. I had some interesting discoveries and of course many inspiring designs that will only make me and my clients happier and healthier. My favorite part of the day was hanging out with Design Star cast/ interior designer Matte Locke so we shared tales of behind the scenes gossip (we I unfortunately can't share but I will give the highlights of the experience). He is a truly genuine man with loads of talent and spunk.

Here are my favorite items from the show

Woolly Pocket Garden Company
which seets soft sided modular nests for growing plants on YOUR WALLS! Yes I said, your walls. They are breathable and it is so cool I'm going to do it in my own home. Like today.

AGI grass rugs. I have always loved the smell of fresh cut grass but now you can have it indoors (well the grass but now you don't have to cut it) with this fake grass for indoor or outdoor. I'm just saying I would use this instead of carpet if I can't have cork or wood.

Last but not least the totally amazing Astek inc. which offers vintage recreations, removeable wall coverings with eco-friendly solutions. You can even design your own.

Zero VOC Paint that is safe and beautiful says the color consultant

As a color designer I not only think about what type of colors a paint manufacturer offers but also how the paint is going to affect my clients after its applied on the walls. As a painting contractor for years my crews and I tried many different paints which were low or zero VOC and there were many which fell short in application, ability for touch up and color options. Yolo Colorhouse is one of my favorites. My other go to paint is Aura by Benjamin Moore. Both are zero VOC, easy to apply, touch up and have a limited palette that doesn't overwhelm but inspires.
